Belonging is a core personality need; our social change identity extends who we are and thus encompasses our personality (Fiske, 2010). How I view myself is influenced by how others view me. My beliefs and values are determined by those I surround myself with. At the core of my social change identity is the belief that what I am fighting for is morally right; this moral compass is partially developed by the groups and people I feel I belong (Fiske, 2010). Therefore, feeling that I belong provides me the security to fight for change and enables me to interact and work with people to elicit the change I seek.
